Abstract

The availability of fine aggregates as supporting construction materials needs to be evaluated, particularly in the utilization of sustainable local resources. Popalia River sand in Kolaka Regency has the potential to be used as fine aggregate; however, its characteristics must be examined to ensure compliance with technical requirements. This study aims to evaluate the characteristics of Popalia River sand as fine aggregate based on material suitability. The research employed a laboratory experimental method by testing the physical properties of the material in accordance with Indonesian National Standards (SNI), including gradation analysis, mud content, moisture content, specific gravity, water absorption, and bulk density of fine aggregate. The results indicate that Popalia River sand meets the technical requirements for fine aggregate, as evidenced by appropriate gradation, mud content below the allowable limit, and acceptable values of specific gravity and water absorption. Therefore, Popalia River sand is feasible for use as a local fine aggregate and has the potential to support the utilization of construction materials based on local resources.
